Paleogenomics. It's in our DNA!
This is a concept piece for a series of posters.
Each poster shows an image based on a peer reviewed paper with text that explains the science, the art, and the link to a custom web site.
Title
Crossing Beringia
Media
Original pigment print
Sizes
36 x 48 inches
The art highlights one of many amazing stories revealed by DNA — deep ancestry and planetary migrations. Like all the posters in the series, “Paleogenomics”, shows an image inspired by scientific research.
The text below the image explains why the science is so cool and how you can find out more on the web site "One Cool Molecule.com". This is the text on the poster:
The story: Scientists are finding family from the steppes of Siberia to caves of Iberia. It’s a story from prehistory about our shared ancestry found in our DNA. The study of these ancient genomes called Palaeo Genomics, also reveal our ancestors’ patterns of migration in prehistoric times.
The art: Shown above is “Crossing Beringa”, a DNA Portrait of a Native American man and his Y chromosome and mtDNA haplogroup routes. The work is one in a series of DNA portraits by Lynn Fellman commissioned by the University of Minnesota. New work similar to this will be created by Fellman for the One Cool Molecule project.
The science: the art is based on a paper published in the journal “Nature” vol. 468, 2010, titled “Genetic history of an archaic homonin group from Denisova Cave in Siberia”.
Curious? One Cool Molecule is a series of works of art displayed on a web site that explore intriguing DNA research in the human genome. The site relates stories of discovery through art and narrative. Each story is based on a scientific publication and paired with a unique image. Science and art together illuminate the story of our shared DNA.
