Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, wanted contemporary art for their new building. Intrigued by my use of genetics, they commissioned a triptych for the main guest area. I also designed images for the large electronic display in the main entrance.
The three panel work depicts the evolution of life — from the origin of life forms to origin of our species and the historic migration out of Africa to all parts of the world.
The first piece shows the appearance RNA, DNA, and the emergence of small organisms and plants. The center panel shows creatures that transition from water to land.
In the third piece, the familiar landscape shows the historic migration out of Africa. The burst of ATCGs, the chemical bases that make up our DNA, express the journey humans made to all parts of the world.
Understanding our ancestry through recent discoveries from the human genome are some of our culture’s greatest intellectual treasures. This work celebrates this story.
