Highest quality media: I print my artwork on my giclée printer using museum-quality materials — pigment inks on archival cotton paper — to ensure lightfastness and longevity.
The “Dancing Helix” series celebrates the dynamic quality of our genome. Each work starts with pencil sketches to shape ideas, and then portions are painted and digitized. Translucent shapes and colors are added in many layers using various digital tools to build the finished image.
Did you know the genome inside the nucleus is constantly moving? The genome (your DNA) is packaged into chromosomes that twist and turn—constantly winding-unwinding. The ongoing motion brings genes closer together to activate vital genetic functions. My “Dancing Helix” artwork mimics the double-stranded molecule’s dynamic, plastic-like ability. It’s how the magnificent genome works!
The “Raging Climate” series features genetically modified model organisms in raging vivid colors. The three versions of “Zea mays” show the multi-colored kernels that transposons (jumping genes) can create.
You can read about the curious behavior of jumping genes in my “Decoding Plant Genomes” book and see the original, delicate black-and-white drawings that inspired the vibrantly colored fine art prints.
