Who is Rebel Artist for Science
DNA-themed fine art, books, videos, and notecards by Lynn Fellman at FellmanStudio.com.

“Artist” is a character in my work. She asks questions about our genome. Explains it so we get it. No jargon. No barriers. Making scientific concepts clear. Speaking for all of us, Artist makes our voices visible.

Rebel Artist for Science: Who is she?

Her name is Artist. She’s a character in my books — and she is me, Lynn Fellman.

Rebel Artist was never going to stay as ink on paper, confined to my books. We step off the shelf for real conversations with scientists — on campus, in their labs and greenhouses.

We talk to scientists still pursuing basic research. Genomics on Long Island (CSHL), plant biology in Philadelphia (UPenn), and genome engineering in Minneapolis (CGE). Work underway can be viewed here.

Now the conversation is getting bigger. Scientists, yes. And people like you and me, standing up for science. Rebel Artist for Science™ shows up for all of us.

It’s my new body of work — and you are part of it. I’m out and about with iPhone in hand and sketchbook in my backpack.

Look for me in your neighborhood. Community centers. Conferences and farmers markets. I show up with a pocket full of Rebel Artist stickers and hand them out for free.

“Hi, I’m Rebel Artist for Science™,” I say with a smile. “Would you like a sticker?” Some look a little confused, then say, “Sure.” Most laugh, “Yes, thanks!”

Laughter and free stickers are proving to be conversation starters — just what I hope for. I listen to what people fear, what they care about. And ask, “May I include you in my project? Will you stand up for science?” Say yes, and just like that, we begin a story.

Back in my studio, I write, draw, and make videos of the moments. Scientists still pursuing their research. Ordinary folks defending democracy in their neighborhoods.

Because here’s the thing: showing up matters. Asking questions matters. Demanding funding for basic research, for evidence-based policy, protecting freedom of the press — that’s not abstract. That’s what Americans do.
