About the “Tangled Helix” fine art print.
The 19th-century naturalist Charles Darwin inspired the title and composition of this image. In his classic book, “On the Origin of Species,” Darwin speculates on the mechanism for life 100 years before the discovery, in 1953, of DNA and the Double Helix.
He imagines the deep time of evolution spinning out the marvelous diversity of life as a “tangled bank.” I’ve paraphrased the last chapter in the book:
There is grandeur in this view of life… that, whilst this planet has gone circling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved.
The “Tangled Helix” artwork celebrates the dynamic genome and the wondrous and diverse life forms evolution provides.
